DNA sexing from blood is an excellent method of sample collection. For many years, blood sample was the only way to collect a DNA sample in order to perform a bird sexing test. For some, this method may be inconvenient; that is why we offer DNA sexing from feathers as well. Both processes are in many ways alike, ensuring an equal reliability and accurate results.
There are several ways to extract the blood sample from the bird. Some decide on clipping the bird’s toenail just enough to scratch the vein and allow bleeding. We recommend using a pin to prick a vein in the foot. We sell blood kits which contain a pin, blotting paper, bag, instructions and sample form for 50 cents per bird, with free shipping.
Please follow the steps below to complete the blood collection for the bird sexing test:

Label a blood sample card for each of the birds that are to be sexed.
You need to include some form of identification. The identification can be the bird’s name or number, e.g. Luke 326, L89, Petey, etc. |

Complete the form with all the requested information regarding the birds that are to be sexed. |

Use a pin to prick a vein in the foot and absorb a small droplet of blood onto a blood card.
Ensure cleaning the pin with alcohol between birds (if sexing more than one). |

Let the blood card dry on a clean surface. Once the card is completely dry, place it into the bag/envelope and post it to us with the completed form and payment (one card per envelope).
Blood cards, sample form and payment should all be posted to us.
